DELIVERED-ORDER GUIDE

Why proof of delivery may not win a Shopify chargeback.

Tracking marked delivered is an important fact. It is not a complete answer to every payment dispute. To understand a lost case, separate delivery evidence from the question the bank was deciding.

The starting point

The question “where did the parcel go?” differs from “did the cardholder authorize this payment?” Review the actual dispute reason before drawing conclusions.

Delivery evidence answers a particular question

For a non-receipt complaint, the shipment address, carrier record and delivery confirmation can be relevant. For an unauthorized-payment complaint, there are additional questions about who placed the order and whether they were entitled to use the payment method.

Shopify’s evidence guidance distinguishes dispute types and explains that evidence does not guarantee a win. A merchant can have genuine delivery information and still receive an unfavorable outcome. Do not infer fraud by the customer solely from that combination.

Check what the delivery record leaves open

Start with an exact match between the disputed order and shipment. Was this the whole order or one parcel? Did an address change occur? Was a delivery exception recorded? Did the customer report an issue that never reached the original evidence review?

A photo or signature can add context, but the person reviewing the case still needs to know how it connects to the order. Preserve dates and identify which record supports each fact. Avoid replacing missing facts with confident assumptions.

  • Confirm the shipment, order and address match.
  • Review missing items and partial shipments.
  • Read messages about receipt, damage, cancellation and returns.
  • Check for refunds or resolutions after the shipment.

Distinguish an open response from a completed loss

If the dispute is still open, follow the deadline and evidence options shown in Shopify. This guide is not a reason to delay an active response while preparing a separate recovery workflow.

After a completed loss, check Shopify’s documented options rather than assuming you can simply resubmit. Keep any subsequent order resolution separate from the original issuer outcome.

What a useful post-loss review looks like

Write down the dispute reason, the available evidence, the customer’s concern and the unanswered questions. Then review refunds, returns and other payments. A clear record of uncertainty is more useful than a blanket statement that a delivered order must be paid again.

If an appropriate next step exists, review its recipient and wording carefully. Where facts or rights are uncertain, investigate or get suitable advice before a request. Some cases should be excluded.

Use the website to keep the Shopify facts together

Commerce Recovery connects to your installed Shopify app so order reviews, customer messages, payment records and case stops use the same recovery history. It does not independently decide that delivery creates a debt.

Start from the imported lost case, inspect the available evidence and approve each supported action yourself. Keep replies and return issues attached to the case so the review reflects what is known now, not only what was known at dispatch.
